David and Victoria Beckham Secure Approval for Lighting at Their Cotswolds Estate

David and Victoria Beckham have successfully obtained planning permission to install external lighting at their expansive Cotswolds estate, affectionately dubbed their own ‘Love Island.’ Situated near Great Tew, Oxfordshire, their Grade-II listed property has been the focus of multiple development applications since the couple purchased it in 2016 for £6,150,000.

In 2020, they initially received permission to create a kidney-shaped pond with an island featuring a firepit and various vegetation. This approval came with strict conditions to ensure the additions harmonize with the rural surroundings and protect local wildlife, especially foraging and commuting bats. Concerns arose after a Netflix documentary showed the pond and a ‘private beach,’ sparking suspicion that the Beckhams might have exceeded their initial planning consent.

Recently, the couple satisfied two key conditions by submitting detailed plans for external lighting and a comprehensive landscaping scheme. These plans demonstrated careful consideration to minimize light spillage into nearby wildlife corridors. The landscaping details include planting areas, tree and plant species, screening, mounding, walls, fences, and hard surface materials, all maintained under a five-year framework prepared by Portus + Whitton.

Alongside lighting approval, the Beckhams are pursuing further permission to extend their driveway, linking it to a new access road from Ledwell Lane. This expansion aims to circumvent the single-lane cul-de-sac currently serving as the sole entrance to both their residence and the nearby Soho Farmhouse. However, their proposal faces ongoing opposition from neighbors concerned about increased traffic disruption to local ramblers and the rural character.

Since acquiring the property comprising three listed barns, the Beckhams have transformed it with several additions, including new gates, an extended garage, a tennis court, a treehouse, and security features. These developments have sometimes been met with criticism from neighbors who feel the changes bring suburban elements into the countryside.

West Oxfordshire District Council recently approved the lighting and landscaping applications, while the new driveway extension remains under review. The Beckham family continues to balance enhancing their dream home with local planning regulations and community concerns.
