Dangerous Driving on Pavements Sparks Safety Concerns Amid A40 Closure in Gloucestershire

Frustration is mounting among motorists as the extended closure of a major section of the A40 in Gloucestershire continues to disrupt travel and compromise safety. Since May, damage to Hambrook Bridge has led to roadworks on the A40 London Road in Charlton Kings, initially expected to conclude sooner but now extended well beyond schedule.

The closure, which began in September, has forced drivers onto a 12-mile official diversion designed to accommodate vehicles similar to those that use the A40. Despite clear signage directing motorists along this longer route, some drivers have responded dangerously by mounting pavements and curbs, putting pedestrians at serious risk.

Local authorities have condemned these actions. Charlton Kings PCSO Nikkita Horsted highlighted increasing reports of careless and hazardous driving in the area. “We urge all drivers to exercise caution, especially during nighttime and rush hours. While we understand the inconvenience caused by ongoing roadworks, adherence to the Highway Code is essential to keep everyone safe,” Horsted stated.

The initial hope to reopen the road ahead of November’s Cheltenham Racecourse meeting has been dashed, with expectations now set for a partial reopening—possibly one lane—later this year or early in 2026.

Police have vowed to investigate any criminal offenses stemming from reckless driving during this period. Residents and visitors are encouraged to report any safety concerns directly to Gloucestershire Highways and the local council.

Authorities emphasize the importance of following the officially designated 12-mile diversion to prevent unnecessary congestion and disruption in local communities, urging drivers to avoid shortcuts through smaller roads that are ill-equipped for heavy traffic.
