The Met Office has issued a severe “danger to life” warning as Gloucestershire braces for heavy, persistent rain beginning Monday, December 8. The 24-hour warning is in effect from 6 pm Monday until 6 pm Tuesday, with rainfall totals potentially reaching up to 100mm in the most exposed and hilly areas.
Officials warn that fast-flowing or deep floodwaters could pose significant risks to life. Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution as road conditions will deteriorate, while transport services may face disruptions. There is also a small but notable risk of flooding affecting homes and businesses.
Adding to the potential disruption, southerly winds are expected to strengthen, particularly impacting the South West and potentially intensifying the effects of the heavy rainfall.

The Met Office explains: “Rainfall will become persistent and heavy from Monday night into Tuesday morning. Although the rain may ease to intermittent showers during Tuesday daytime, occasional heavy bursts will still be possible.”
Rainfall amounts are expected to vary across the region, with most areas seeing between 20-40 mm. Dartmoor and the high ground in south Wales could receive 60-80 mm, while the most exposed and prone hills might experience between 80-100 mm.
Given the already saturated ground, flooding is likely in some locations, and transport services are expected to face delays or disruptions. The accompanying strengthening southerly winds may exacerbate the impacts of the deluge.
Currently, the warning is classified as having medium impact with a very low likelihood of occurrence.
The broader South West weather forecast from Monday through Wednesday notes: “Monday will be brighter with occasional blustery showers. A heavy rain band will bring wet and windy conditions on Tuesday, with coastal gales likely. Showers will return on Wednesday.”
Gloucestershire is anticipated to experience the heaviest overnight showers around 3 am on Tuesday, December 9, making travel and safety precautions vital.
