‘Danger to life’ amber warning issued by Met Office on Gloucestershire border

The Met Office has issued a rare amber weather warning for heavy rain across much of South Wales, including Monmouthshire near the Gloucestershire border, valid throughout Monday. This 24-hour alert, running from midnight to 11:59 pm, signals likely disruption and flooding.

Forecasters predict persistent heavy rainfall beginning Sunday night, with some areas receiving up to 120mm of rain. The intense downpour could lead to fast-flowing or deep floodwaters, posing a potential danger to life. Alongside the rain, strong winds—especially along coastal regions—are expected to exacerbate conditions.

The adverse weather conditions may cause widespread travel disruptions, including train and bus cancellations, power outages, and hazardous driving conditions, potentially resulting in road closures.

This warning follows heavy rainfalls that impacted much of Wales and South West England on Saturday morning. The amber alert reflects a medium likelihood of occurrence with medium impact expected.

Areas in Gloucestershire closely monitor flooding risks due to heavy rains in Wales affecting the River Severn and other waterways over the coming days. Currently, flood alerts are active on rivers such as the Forest of Dean and the River Wye near the Wales border.

The Met Office advises the public to consider changing plans and taking precautions to protect life and property during an amber warning. It is vital to assess the potential impact on families and communities and prepare accordingly in advance of the severe weather.

The amber warning represents the second-highest alert level issued by the Met Office, just below a red warning, which is reserved for when there is an imminent and significant threat to life.
