Dame Prue Leith, the beloved Great British Bake Off judge, caught staff at an Edinburgh hair salon off guard with an unexpected visit ahead of a charity event. Dame Prue and her husband, John Playfair, stopped by Craig Davidson Hair salon in Bruntsfield on Tuesday morning while attending the Women of Achievement lunch at Archer’s Hall.
Although the couple lives in the Cotswolds, they were visiting a friend in Edinburgh who recommended the salon. Ashley Wilson, the salon manager, recounted her surprise when a local called on Monday afternoon to book an appointment for “Prue Leith.” Initially unsure it was the Prue Leith, Ashley was thrilled when the celebrity baking expert and her husband walked through the door.
Dame Prue arrived in one of her signature colorful dresses, matching glasses, and earrings. While Ashley blow-dried her hair with exacting precision, she described Dame Prue as “an absolute delight” — super-friendly, witty, warm, and thoroughly pleasant to chat with.

When asked if Dame Prue revealed any hints about who might win the 2025 Great British Bake Off, which was crowned on Channel 4 that same evening, Ashley said, “She said nothing — totally tight-lipped about the final.” Salon owner Craig Davidson, who trimmed Mr. Playfair’s hair, confirmed the couple kept all spoilers under wraps, joking that John Playfair would be divorced if he revealed the winner.
The visit proved a memorable experience for the salon team. Ashley called it a privilege to work on Dame Prue’s hair, while Craig welcomed the opportunity to host such a prominent couple at his business, which has been thriving in Bruntsfield Place for 30 years.
Wrapping up the visit, Dame Prue posed for photos with the staff beside a tempting stand of cupcakes, embodying the perfect blend of charm and celebrity. The salon shared a glowing tribute on social media, writing: “Proof that great hair is the secret ingredient. Loved having Prue Leith with us today.”
