Customer Surprised by Cost of Sunday Lunch at Jeremy Clarkson’s The Farmer’s Dog Pub

A guest dining at Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, The Farmer’s Dog in West Oxfordshire, was left stunned by the total bill for his party of four during a visit on Sunday, 20 September. Rick Gannon shared his reaction after enjoying a pint of the presenter’s flagship Hawkstone Lager, served in the pub’s signature glass.

Reservations for the pub, which prides itself on sourcing British produce, open on the first day of each month for the following month and are known to be quickly snapped up. The pub’s website advises those unable to secure a booking they can still visit for a drink or eat at nearby food outlets, including The Farmer’s Puppy and The Farmer’s Dough inside The Grand Tour Tent.

Clarkson, who transitioned from a career in television to farming, emphasises his commitment to using British ingredients throughout the menu. He notes that the pork, beef, lamb, venison, dairy products, and most fruits and vegetables are all procured from British farmers, with cooking oils also sourced locally. He admits there are exceptions, such as quinine in tonic water, which cannot be grown in Britain, affecting the traditional gin and tonic offering.

After his visit, Rick posted a photo of his detailed receipt that showed charges including four roast dinners at £26 each and a 12.5% service charge totalling £35.26, culminating in a final bill of £317.36. His beer alone cost £14.

Responses to Rick’s post varied, with many defending the prices. Some pointed out the extensive food and drinks ordered, including sharing boards, sides, and desserts. Comments highlighted that spending around £79 per person for a substantial meal and drinks was reasonable, particularly given the quality and provenance of the produce. Others suggested that those seeking cheaper meals might consider different venues.

Rick also shared more about the venue’s facilities for those without reservations, showcasing The Grand Tour Tent, where visitors can purchase merchandise and enjoy food from a pizza and burger van. He highlighted the on-site butcher counters featuring produce from three local farms and the outdoor bar named The Farmer’s Puppy.

The Farmer’s Dog continues to attract visitors keen to sample Jeremy Clarkson’s farm-to-table culinary experience, though the prices have sparked lively conversations about value and dining expectations in such establishments.
