A simple decision not to buy a lottery scratchcard at a Detroit petrol station turned into an extraordinary stroke of luck for another customer. A 33-year-old Michigan man, who chose to remain anonymous, picked up a discard ticket from the counter and instantly won a staggering $1 million (£760,000).
The lucky winner shared, “I scratched the ticket off and couldn’t believe it when I saw it was a $1 million winner. I never thought I’d win such a large prize—it’s truly a blessing.” Choosing to receive a lump sum instead of an annuity, he will take home approximately $693,000 (£530,000).
While ecstatic, the winner admitted that such an unexpected gain also brings pressure: “Winning is a great feeling, but it also causes your mind to race with all the possibilities of what you could do with this money.”

The winning ticket was purchased at a Sunoco service station in Detroit. Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli congratulated the winner, adding that instant games like Blazing Suits drive lottery sales, which have significantly contributed over $1 billion annually to Michigan schools since 2018.
Across the Atlantic in the UK, luck smiled brightly for Chantelle Riley from Castle Bromwich, Solihull, who celebrated her third substantial prize from the People’s Postcode Lottery. The 47-year-old special educational needs school worker won a £50,000 share of a £1 million prize, adding to her previous wins of £14,221 and £1,078.
Chantelle has been a consistent player in the lottery using her postcode, even maintaining entries for her former addresses after moving twice. This persistence has paid off handsomely. Excited about her latest win, she said, “It’s unreal. I’ve won three times now, and this is my biggest win. I feel very lucky.”
Having recently convinced her partner to join the lottery, Chantelle’s fortune extended to him as well, with both now enjoying £50,000 wins each. She plans to buy the rented home she’s lived in for six years and spoil her first grandchild, due next month.
The People’s Postcode Lottery costs £12.25 per month and guarantees daily winners. Players enter using their postcode and are automatically included in all draws. With a prize fund of £38.2 million up for grabs in December, the deadline to enter is November 30.
