Craig Revel Horwood is often known for his stern and sometimes grumpy judging style on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. However, away from the cameras, the show’s longest-serving judge reportedly reveals a much gentler side.
This softer persona has been witnessed by Danella Mercati, a Cheltenham resident and founder of ChiChi Fit, a popular fitness programme that blends exercise with musical theatre. Danella, who lives in the Warden Hill area and has over 25 years of experience in performing arts and fitness, developed ChiChi Fit with the aim of making fitness fun and inclusive by encouraging participants to dance to well-known show tunes.
Since launching the classes in 2018, the programme has grown significantly. Danella and her trained instructors now lead sessions both physically across the UK and internationally, and also online, allowing hundreds of members from countries including the USA, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia to join from home. The online platform ‘The Stage is Yours’ particularly has helped expand the programme’s reach.

Craig Revel Horwood has been a strong supporter of ChiChi Fit since its early days. He has participated in classes, endorsing the concept and its message that fitness can be accessible and enjoyable for all. In 2023, he became an official ambassador for the business.
Danella shared her observations about Craig’s character: “He’s known on TV as the grumpy judge, but his real personality is that of a kind and lovely man. He receives a lot of criticism on Strictly, yet his talents and warmth extend far beyond what viewers see. He’s very enthusiastic about ChiChi Fit and what it offers.”
Reflecting on the programme’s philosophy, Danella explained, “It’s about the transformative power of show tunes. They’re filled with possibility and help people turn movement into confidence.” She emphasised that each class combines dynamic choreography, iconic tunes, and cardio exercise, making workouts feel like full-scale performances.
Craig conveyed his excitement about his role, stating, “I’m absolutely delighted to be an ambassador for ChiChi Fit. Their unique musical theatre-based exercise programme combines fitness, performance, and pure joy. It’s a fabulous celebration of movement, confidence, and self-expression – all things I’m passionate about.”
Danella’s journey began with musical theatre training at the Guildford School of Acting and a professional performing career. A pivotal moment came after a chance meeting with Sir Paul McCartney, who encouraged her to “create your own stage.” This inspired her to merge her passions for dance, show tunes, and wellbeing into what is now ChiChi Fit.
Her vision remains straightforward yet impactful: to help individuals step into their own spotlight, rediscover their sparkle, and prove that fitness can be joyful, inclusive, and unforgettable.
