Andrew Maclean, the groundbreaking Green Party councillor for The Rissingtons in Cotswold District Council, earned a heartfelt standing ovation as he announced his resignation on November 26, after being diagnosed with a serious brain tumour.
At a full council meeting, Cllr Maclean shared the difficult news that earlier this year, while visiting family in Senegal, he experienced a seizure. Subsequent tests revealed the presence of a life-threatening brain tumour. Despite currently having no symptoms, he acknowledged the prognosis is grim.
“This is with great sadness that I must step down as a district councillor,” Maclean said. “I’ve had the privilege of representing The Rissingtons for six years, during which the initially surprised, well-heeled residents of Wyck Rissington welcomed me warmly.”

Cllr Maclean reflected fondly on his tenure, highlighting his work championing sustainability, energy efficiency, and protecting the beautiful Cotswold countryside. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative spirit of his council colleagues, even when opinions differed.
He recognized the difficult timing amid the transition to unitary authority status but emphasized his need to focus on family, cycling in the North Cotswolds, and his faith as he prepares for the challenges ahead. “Thank you all for your support and understanding,” he concluded.
Council Chairman Mark Harris praised Maclean’s wisdom, passion, and humor, offering the council’s ongoing support through the coming months. Council leader Mike Evemy and Conservative group leader Tom Stowe also paid tribute, describing Maclean as approachable, insightful, and a respected gentleman who will be deeply missed.
Maclean’s courage and dedication have left a lasting impact on the council and the wider community, inspiring colleagues and constituents alike as he faces his personal battle with strength and dignity.
