A retired couple has successfully nurtured a Wollemi pine tree, a species once part of a dinosaur’s diet, in their Worcestershire garden. The ancient conifer, thought to have been extinct during the time of the T-Rex, was discovered in a remote region of Australia in 1994, leading to global distribution of saplings and cuttings.
Having purchased an 18-inch sapling in 2010, the couple diligently tended to the tree, which now stands over 13 feet tall and has produced fruit for the first time. With aspirations to propagate seeds from the tree- a critically endangered species, the couple is elated at the opportunity.
The public will have a rare opportunity to visit the garden as part of the National Garden Scheme this weekend, where they can witness this remarkable feat.
