Matt Baker, the warm and engaging presenter of BBC’s Countryfile since 2009, has candidly shared a deeply personal chapter from his youth — the difficult decision to stop pursuing gymnastics after being diagnosed with anaemia as a teenager.
Before becoming a household name on television, Matt was a passionate and accomplished gymnast. His dedication earned him recognition as a North of England champion and fueled his dream of competing at the Olympic Games. “Ever since I was a little lad, it was my dream to be part of the Olympics,” Matt recalls.
However, at around 13, Matt received a life-changing diagnosis of iron deficiency anaemia, a condition that left him unable to train at the rigorous levels gymnastics demands. The diagnosis forced him to make a “heartbreaking” choice to step away from the sport he loved.

“Because of the anaemia, I couldn’t train to the level that was needed, so I made the heartbreaking decision to stop,” he explained. The emotional weight of that moment has stayed with him, but Matt found new avenues in athletics, going on to become a North of England pole-vaulting champion and excelling in sports acrobatics.
Matt’s connection to the Olympics remains strong, as he now contributes as a gymnastics commentator for major events, including the upcoming Paris 2024 Games. One particularly poignant experience was carrying the Olympic torch through his hometown of Durham during the London 2012 relay — a moment he describes as “a real lump-in-your-throat kind of experience.” He treasures the torch to this day.
Iron deficiency anaemia, characterized by symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, palpitations, and headaches, results from insufficient iron levels in the body. Its causes range from heavy menstrual bleeding and pregnancy to the use of certain medications like NSAIDs, as well as digestive tract issues and other medical conditions.
Matt’s story highlights the unexpected challenges that health issues can pose to athletes and the resilience required to find new paths when faced with adversity. His journey from aspiring Olympian to beloved television presenter and sports commentator is a powerful testament to overcoming setbacks and embracing new opportunities.
