On a recent episode of BBC One’s Countryfile, presenter Matt Baker experienced a heart-pounding moment deep inside one of Britain’s most formidable natural wonders. The episode featured an adventure into Ogof Ffynnon Ddu 1 (OFG1), part of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Wales and known as Britain’s deepest and third-longest cave system.
Joined by fellow presenter Sammi Kinghorn, Matt ventured beneath the surface alongside Andy and Antonia Freem, a seasoned couple from the South Wales Caving Club whose combined expertise spans over a century. They were guided by caving instructor Gary Evans on this subterranean journey.
The cave itself extends nearly 6,000 metres and offers restricted access due to its challenging terrain. The team’s purpose was to explore how water shapes the underground landscape, tracing the flow of subterranean rivers and understanding their geological impact.

As they descended into the darkness via a ladder, Matt’s apprehensions grew. When Andy secured and slammed shut the trapdoor behind them, a loud bang echoed through the confined space, prompting Matt to anxiously ask, “What are you locking us in?” The sudden noise and confined setting created a prison-like atmosphere that visibly unsettled him.
Reassurances came quickly from the group as Andrea explained they could freely exit when ready. Still, Matt couldn’t help but express his surprise over the “good slam” of the door, mixing nervous laughter with his evident concern.
Once the initial tension eased, Matt immersed himself in the breathtaking underground world, captivated by the intricate waterways carved by centuries of water flow.
Countryfile continues to bring the wonders of Britain’s landscape to viewers every Sunday on BBC One and via iPlayer.
