On the latest episode of BBC One’s Countryfile, presenter Matt Baker embarked on an exciting journey into the depths of Britain’s longest underground cave system, Ogof Ffynnon Ddu 1, located within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Wales.
Joining Matt were expert cavers Andy and Antonia Freem from the South Wales Caving Club, whose combined caving experience spans over a century, as well as instructor Gary Evans. Together, they ventured into this vast and ancient cavern, over 6,000 metres in length, known for its complex network of subterranean waterways shaped by powerful underground rivers.
The purpose of the expedition was to observe firsthand how water carves its path beneath the earth’s surface. Before the descent, Matt remarked, “Along the way, I will be discovering the magical world created underground by the power of water.”

As the group carefully climbed down a ladder into the dark abyss, Matt’s excitement mixed with apprehension. When Andy secured and slammed shut the trapdoor behind them, the sudden noise startled Matt, prompting him to ask, “What are you locking us in?” His surprised glance communicated his unease.
Andrea, another cave expert, quickly reassured him, “It’s alright, you can get out again.” Despite the reassurance and a lighthearted chuckle from Matt, the sound of the trapdoor echoing through the cavern gave the moment an eerie, prison-like atmosphere.
After overcoming his brief anxiety, Matt fully immersed himself in the mesmerizing subterranean landscape, discovering how the underground waters carve and shape these incredible natural formations.
Countryfile continues to bring viewers closer to Britain’s most stunning natural wonders, airing Sundays on BBC One and available on iPlayer.
