Countryfile’s Adam Henson Surprised by Garlic Farm Discovery

Despite his extensive farming knowledge, Countryfile presenter Adam Henson recently revealed there are still surprises in store for him. During the latest episode of the BBC programme, he visited The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight, the UK’s largest garlic producer, and made an unexpected discovery.

The episode, which aired on Sunday, 6 June, showcased the unique aspects of the Isle of Wight beyond its famous beaches and holiday spots. Alongside co-presenters Joe Crowley and Margherita Taylor, Adam explored the island’s distinctive landscape, rare wildlife, and local produce typically associated with warmer climates.

While Joe used specialized underwater cameras to study rare marine species, and Margherita helped National Trust volunteers monitor a scarce bee variety, Adam focused on The Garlic Farm, a family-run enterprise with over 50 years of heritage. The Boswell family, who own and operate the farm, have dedicated themselves to understanding and innovating with garlic, offering over 30 products including garlic beer and even garlic ice cream.

During the tour, Adam was introduced to elephant garlic stalks, which look like asparagus but have a unique garlicky taste. To his surprise, he learned that all the garlic plants in the farm originate from a single clove. Admitting his astonishment, Adam said, “It all comes from one clove? Well there you go, I’m a farmer and I didn’t know that.”

Later, Adam sat down with the Boswell family to enjoy a meal featuring freshly harvested garlic stalks and a variety of garlic-infused accompaniments, perfect for a hearty salad. He praised the family’s achievements as “quite extraordinary” and “a remarkable achievement,” while the farm’s matriarch expressed pride in passing down the legacy through three generations.

As the episode wrapped up, Joe and Margherita sampled a small pot of black garlic and chocolate ice cream—one of the farm’s unique products—remarking on its delicious and unusual flavor.

Countryfile continues to offer viewers fascinating insights into Britain’s rural life every Sunday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
