Adam Henson, the seasoned BBC Countryfile presenter and 60-year-old farmer, recently made a surprising revelation during a visit to Britain’s largest garlic farm on the Isle of Wight. Despite his extensive farming experience, he admitted, “I didn’t know that,” upon learning a fascinating fact about garlic cultivation.
The episode, aired on Sunday 6 June, showcased the Isle of Wight’s lesser-known features beyond its popular beaches and resorts. While Joe Crowley and Margherita Taylor explored the island’s unique geology and rare wildlife, Adam toured The Garlic Farm, a family-run business owned by the Boswell family for over 50 years.
Known for their dedication to all things garlic, the Boswells have expanded their product line to 30 items, including garlic beer and even garlic ice cream. During the visit, Adam helped harvest elephant garlic stalks—plants resembling asparagus but with distinctive garlic flavor. When told that these plants all originate from a single clove, Adam was genuinely surprised, acknowledging that even as a farmer, this was new information to him.

Later, Adam shared a meal with the family featuring fresh garlic stalks alongside a variety of garlic-based dishes. He praised the farm’s achievements as “quite extraordinary” and commended the family’s enthusiasm and commitment, which spanned three generations.
The show’s closing segment involved Joe and Margherita trying a unique black garlic and chocolate ice cream gift from Adam. Despite initial hesitations, they found the dessert delicious, marveling at how garlic could be so creatively incorporated into such an unexpected treat.
