Countryfile’s Adam Henson Reflects on Family’s Ordeal After Wife’s Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis

Countryfile presenter Adam Henson has shared the emotional and challenging experience his family endured after his wife, Charlie, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2021. The 59-year-old revealed that Charlie first began feeling unwell around Christmas 2020, and by February 2021, doctors had discovered a 4.5cm tumor. The diagnosis came with a grim warning about the low survival rates typically associated with pancreatic cancer, leaving the family “terrified.”

Fortunately, Charlie’s cancer was identified as a neuroendocrine tumor, a form that is treatable. She underwent a complex Whipple procedure to remove part of her pancreas, followed by ongoing treatments including biannual scans, enzyme replacement therapy with Creon capsules, blood thinners, and iron supplements. Despite the severity of her condition and treatment, Charlie has made remarkable progress and remains healthy two years on.

Speaking to BBC Gloucestershire, Adam reflected on the difficult period, saying, “We went through the mill, but we have come out the other side.” He highlighted the toll it took not only on Charlie but on their entire family. Charlie herself shared her perspective in Adam’s 2023 book, My Christmas on the Farm, describing the challenges of adjusting to life post-surgery, especially the lifelong commitment to managing her health. “Remembering to take enough Creon was difficult at first,” she wrote, “but I’m better now, and thankfully, I haven’t developed diabetes—a common risk after such surgery.”

Charlie also described the anxiety surrounding her regular scans: “The worry starts building months before, then the wait for results is all-consuming. Each clear scan, which I have been blessed to receive so far, feels like a priceless gift – six months more of precious life.”

The couple has embraced a deeper appreciation for life since the diagnosis. Adam said, “Our experience means we now want to make the absolute most of life, say yes to things, and prioritize what truly matters. It’s a cliché, but nothing is as important as your health.”

Adam Henson is set to appear on Countryfile on BBC One on June 22 at 5.25 pm. The upcoming episode will feature Matt Baker and Sammi Kinghorn exploring East Devon’s coastal life while Adam cares for a lively group of young animals preparing to leave their herd.
