Countryfile’s Adam Henson Names His Favourite Cotswolds Villages – Castle Combe Not on His List

The Cotswolds often stand as an emblematic image of rural Britain, with their rolling hills and charming villages painting a timeless picture of countryside beauty. Among them, Castle Combe in Wiltshire has long held a reputation as the crown jewel, frequently topping lists that celebrate England’s most picturesque villages. Travel guides have described Castle Combe as “unmatched” in charm, calling it “England’s prettiest village,” despite a steady stream of tourists.

However, Adam Henson, a familiar face on Countryfile and a local farmer from near Guiting Power in Gloucestershire, offers a refreshing perspective. While acknowledging the abundance of attractive villages in the Cotswolds, Adam highlights Burford and Chipping Campden as his personal favourites.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, Adam praised Burford’s High Street as “lovely” and described Chipping Campden as “really, really lovely.” He believes the area has managed to maintain its unique character and natural beauty, even with rising tourist numbers. “I don’t think it’s lost its charm and its beauty as you go into some of the Cotswold villages, and they’re still beautiful,” he said.

Adam also pointed out the enduring architectural appeal of the region, noting the use of traditional Cotswold stone and oolitic limestone, which blend charmingly even with some modern developments. He advocates for sensitive redevelopment, emphasizing that “the development and uplift of any area is a good thing as long as you can maintain and retain the charm.”

His passion for the English countryside extends beyond the Cotswolds. Adam shared fondness for the Yorkshire Dales, the Malham area, and Wensleydale — places known for their rugged, natural beauty.

Though deeply rooted in farming heritage, Adam has hinted at stepping away from the family farm. With his children pursuing careers outside agriculture—his daughter working as an events organiser in Perth and his son as a financial adviser in Leeds—Adam and his wife Charlie plan to relocate to a bungalow in Winchcombe once their tenancy ends in 12 years. They intend to keep some sheep and dogs on their few acres, ensuring a continued connection to rural life.

Reflecting on his family’s farming journey, Adam recalled how his father opened the farm to visitors to experience life on the land. “While I was pulling on my wellies and chasing my dad out of the door to join him on the farm, my own children aren’t interested in a career in farming,” he explained.

Though the farm chapter may be closing, Adam remains committed to enjoying the countryside he loves, marking “the end of an era” but the start of a new phase in the beautiful Cotswolds landscape.
