Adam Henson, owner of Cotswold Farm Park and presenter of BBC’s Countryfile, has openly admitted to “probably breaking one of the rules” during a recent horse whispering session with young Exmoor foals at his Gloucestershire farm.
Known for sharing updates about his working farm with followers, Adam posted a video on the farm’s YouTube channel showcasing the foals’ first training session. Horse whispering emphasizes understanding an animal’s natural communication — non-verbal cues and energy — to foster trust, rather than traditional methods of control.
During the session, Adam offered one of the foals an apple treat, quickly realizing it was against the expert advice. “Ian did say to me they don’t really need treats. So, I’m probably breaking one of the rules by giving her some apples,” Adam said, laughing. He added, “It’s all about patience.”

The presenter also shared insights from the training experts about animal behavior. He explained that stroking the horses gently is preferred over patting, as the latter can come across as aggressive or startling. “It’s as much about the person as it is about the horse,” he reflected, comparing it to dog training where owner behavior impacts the animal’s reactions.
Adam confirmed that the team will continue working with the foals to prepare them for public visits, aiming for visitors to experience close encounters with the gentle ponies at Cotswold Farm Park.
In a separate revelation, Adam recently disclosed on the Talking Farming podcast his regret about missing a lucrative chance to acquire Swiss valley sheep after filming a celebratory roundup in Switzerland for Countryfile. He admitted, “I could have made myself wealthy, but I missed it.”
Fans can catch Adam Henson on Countryfile Sunday, 17 May, from 6.15pm to 7.15pm on BBC Two.
