Countryfile Star Sean Fletcher Opens Up on Heartbreaking Loss and Outdoor Healing

Sean Fletcher, beloved host of Countryfile and Good Morning Britain, has spoken openly about the profound impact of losing his mother to bowel cancer and his dedication to raising awareness about the disease. Beyond his TV career and family life, Sean is passionate about the outdoors and an avid runner.

Recently, Sean partnered with GO Outdoors to showcase their autumn/winter collection. Reflecting on the collaboration and the benefits of spending time outside, he said, “Many of my programmes are outdoors, so I’m always meeting people who work and live outside — whether it’s farmers, adventurers, or others deeply passionate about the land. It really feels like a dream job.”

He added, “Being outdoors is incredibly nourishing for your mental wellbeing. Personally, it recharges my batteries—whether I’m in a London park or facing the elements in the countryside. I always feel better after being outside.”

Sean emphasized the importance of making the outdoors accessible to everyone, regardless of background or location. “Whether you live in a quaint Cotswold village or come from a disadvantaged area in Manchester, the countryside belongs to all of us,” he said. “Part of that accessibility is having the right clothing to participate comfortably, which is why working with GO Outdoors feels natural.”

Among his favourite pieces from the range is the versatile Peter Storm 3-in-1 jacket, which he says is essential for layering in variable weather.

Sean also shared touching memories of his late mother and how he has honoured her by running the London Marathon multiple times for Bowel Cancer UK. Initially hesitant to take part, he described the experience as incredibly rewarding. “My mum passed away from bowel cancer eight years ago. Running the marathon was emotional and hard, but being surrounded by so many people running for loved ones or charities made it feel uplifting. I ran it four years in a row.”

Recalling his mother’s illness, Sean revealed how she kept her diagnosis from him and how rapidly her health deteriorated. “She lived a long way away in East Essex while I was in Wales, so visiting wasn’t easy. When I finally learned the truth, it all happened quickly—she passed away just three and a half weeks after I found out. Those last weeks were heartbreaking.”

His candid reflections underscore his commitment to both mental health awareness and cancer advocacy.

As an ambassador for GO Outdoors, Sean Fletcher encourages everyone to embrace the outdoors and discover how it can enhance wellbeing and foster connection to nature.
