Michaela Strachan, beloved former presenter of Countryfile and current Springwatch star, has offered an inspiring update on her health following a personal battle with breast cancer and a painful injury. Now 59, Michaela is gearing up for a UK tour where she will reflect on her four-decade career and the challenges she has overcome.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, Michaela underwent a double mastectomy and committed to five years of tamoxifen treatment. Recently, Springwatch fans expressed concern after spotting a lump on her throat, but thankfully, doctors found it to be a benign cyst. The cyst was drained successfully, and Michaela reports she feels “great” with no further health scares as she approaches her 60th birthday.
In an exclusive interview, she shared, “I forget I’ve had breast cancer, which is incredible. I hope this inspires others going through it. For me, it was just an operation, followed by medication. It was about 12 or 13 years ago, and I promise you, I forget that I’ve had it.” She added confidently, “[I’m] all good, almost 60, fit and well.”

Michaela’s resilience was further showcased last year when she competed on Dancing On Ice. Despite reaching the final with her partner, Mark Hanretty, she experienced severe physical pain throughout training. “When I started, I thought, ‘Oh my God, what have I agreed to? This is absolutely agonising,'” she recalled. At one point, the pain moved her to tears.
Just three days before the finale, Michaela sustained a serious injury—a torn hamstring and glute muscles—which went unnoticed for some time due to adrenaline and medication. Months later, an MRI revealed the extent of the damage. She has since committed to rigorous rehabilitation and reports steady improvement. “It’s taken a year of proper rehab exercises to feel better,” she said.
Looking ahead, Michaela is excited about her new tour, Not Just A Wild Life, launching this April across England. The show promises to weave together stories from her early days on The Wide Awake Club and The Really Wild Show to her more recent roles. Fans can expect entertaining anecdotes, including how a rubber chicken kickstarted her career.
Describing her life’s journey, Michaela remarked, “My career is like a road with wonderful detours I never expected. That’s why the show is called Not Just A Wild Life—because it covers everything.” She acknowledged the challenge of fitting so much into two 45-minute segments but expressed enthusiasm for celebrating her remarkable career with audiences who have grown alongside her.
