The latest episode of Countryfile began with a profoundly impactful update that left presenter Sammi Kinghorn visibly shaken. On Sunday, 24 May, hosts Matt Baker and Sammi ventured into the forests of the Welsh valleys during a critical time as the region faces an escalating wildfire risk transitioning from spring to summer.
At Gethin Forest in Merthyr Tydfil, nestled beneath the iconic Bannau Brycheiniog mountains, Sammi and Matt encountered the steep, tree-clad river valleys famed for their beauty, biodiversity, and outdoor pursuits. However, this stunning terrain is also highly vulnerable to wildfires, a recurring seasonal threat that has worsened in recent years due to climate change.
Sammi explained, “The steep, wooded valley of South Wales is often an overlooked natural asset, but its topography significantly worsens the wildfire problem.” Over 3,000 wildfires were recorded in South Wales last year alone, many believed to be deliberately set, while others resulted from careless barbecues. The valley’s steep slopes act like natural accelerators, funneling winds and making fires spread rapidly and uncontrollably.

Geraint Price, who manages more than 8,000 hectares of woodland, shared his firsthand experience of the ongoing destruction. “It’s devastating,” he said. “With climate change, wildfires are happening more frequently, especially at this time of year. We had one just last night, and another a few weeks ago.” Drone footage shown during the programme revealed the terrifying speed and intensity with which these fires can spread.
“This kind of destruction after decades of growing trees is heartbreaking,” Geraint reflected. He emphasized the deep environmental impact on wildlife, conservation efforts, and recreational opportunities in the valleys. Arson remains a major cause of the fires, despite prevention efforts.
Effective monitoring and surveying are crucial tools in the fight against wildfires. Geraint outlined plans to deploy drones to inspect firebreaks and key areas, while Sammi joined the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to learn about their strategies for tackling the forest’s greatest threat.
This poignant episode highlighted the urgent need for vigilance and conservation in the face of increasing wildfire danger across the Welsh valleys.
