In the latest episode of Countryfile aired on Sunday, 24 May, viewers were confronted with sobering news about the increasing threat of wildfires in the Welsh valleys. Presenters Matt Baker and Sammi Kinghorn visited the forests of South Wales during a pivotal time when the shift from spring to summer significantly raises wildfire risks.
The episode opened with Sammi arriving in Gethin Forest, Merthyr Tydfil, a steep, tree-covered river valley nestled beneath Bannau Brycheiniog. Known for its rich biodiversity, breathtaking landscapes, and outdoor sports, the area is increasingly vulnerable to wildfires that are both frequent and devastating.
Sammi highlighted the valley’s unique topography that exacerbates the wildfire danger. Last year alone, South Wales experienced over 3,000 wildfires, many caused by deliberate arson and careless barbecue practices. The steep terrain acts like a natural amplifier, accelerating winds and rapidly spreading fires.

Forestry expert Geraint Price, responsible for managing more than 8,000 hectares of woodland, shared his firsthand experience dealing with the damage wildfires cause. He recounted recent fires that occurred just days apart, explaining how emotional it is to witness decades of tree growth reduced to ash. “It’s heartbreaking,” he said, emphasizing the severe impact on wildlife, conservation, and recreational activities.
Drone footage presented during the show vividly captured the terrifying speed and intensity with which wildfires can spread. Geraint stressed that prevention depends largely on vigilant monitoring and early detection. He discussed plans to deploy drones for inspecting firebreaks, a critical measure in wildfire management.
The episode also featured a segment with the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, showcasing the frontline efforts to combat this escalating natural threat.
Countryfile continues to shed light on vital environmental issues, reminding us of the fragile balance in these treasured natural landscapes and the urgent need for conservation efforts.
