Council Aims to Recover £220k Demolition Cost from Millionaire for Illegal Leisure Complex

The Forest of Dean District Council has revealed that the demolition of an illegal leisure complex, referred to as “Britain’s biggest man cave,” has cost taxpayers approximately £220,000. The council is now seeking to recover the full cost from millionaire accountant Graham Wildin, who built the 10,000sq/ft building without planning permission. The leisure complex, situated in Meendhurst Road in Cinderford, boasted a bowling alley, casino, and a cinema and was at the center of a ten-year battle with the council over the planning breach.

The council emphasized the importance of adhering to planning regulations, stressing that individuals who flout these rules not only act unlawfully but also place an unfair burden on the wider public. The authority is determined to address planning breaches decisively and has commenced proceedings to reclaim the entire demolition cost from the landowner.

This high-profile case serves as a stark reminder of the significance of compliance with planning rules, according to council chiefs. The council’s solicitor, Helen Clarke, was lauded for her unwavering determination and courage in tackling one of the council’s most significant enforcement issues.

Councillors expressed gratitude for the diligent effort put forth, noting that the enforcement would not have been worthwhile without the intervention. The council confirmed that the funds for the demolition were sourced from approved resources and reiterated its commitment to upholding the planning system and safeguarding the interests of its residents.

Mr. Wildin has not yet provided a comment on the matter.
