Council Acts to Secure Derelict Spread Eagle Court Amid Rising Vandalism and Trespassing

Gloucester City Centre’s derelict Spread Eagle Court on Northgate Street, long considered an eyesore, will soon be secured to prevent further trespassing and vandalism. Multiple complaints from residents have prompted Gloucester City Council to take decisive action against the unchecked anti-social behaviour occurring at the vacant building.

Following a recent inspection by council officers, numerous safety hazards and signs of forced entry were identified at the privately-owned property. In response, an enforcement notice was issued earlier this month requiring the owners to secure the building within seven days.

The deadline has now passed without any remedial work being completed, prompting the City Council to intervene directly. Council leader Jeremy Hilton (LD, Kingsholm and Wotton), who has repeatedly voiced concerns about the condition of the building, confirmed that safeguarding measures will be implemented shortly.

“Spread Eagle Court is a significant structure located within a conservation area, yet it remains in a severe state of neglect,” Hilton stated. “The landlord’s failure to maintain the property has resulted in safety risks and increased anti-social behaviour. With multiple complaints made by the public, it’s clear urgent action was needed.”

The council’s intervention aims to protect the building’s architectural integrity and halt further damage caused by vandalism and unauthorised access. Work to secure Spread Eagle Court is expected to begin imminently, marking an important step toward restoring public safety and preserving Gloucester’s heritage.
