Could Eating Yoghurt Lower Your Bowel Cancer Risk?

An oncology expert has highlighted the potential link between regular yoghurt consumption and a lower risk of aggressive colorectal cancer. Professor Justin Stebbing, a renowned figure in the field of Biomedical Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, discussed the impact of yoghurt on cancer prevention in a recent piece on The Conversation website. He emphasized the role of the gut microbiome in influencing overall health and reducing the risk of cancer development, particularly in the context of colorectal cancer.

The findings, based on a comprehensive study involving over 150,000 participants followed for several decades, indicated that consuming two or more servings of yoghurt per week might alter the gut microbiome in ways that offer protection against certain cancers. Specifically, it was associated with a lower risk of a specific type of aggressive colorectal cancer that occurs on the right side of the colon. The study revealed that the live cultures of beneficial bacteria present in yoghurt, such as lactobacillus bulgaricus and streptococcus thermophilus, could contribute to maintaining a healthy balance of gut bacteria, potentially reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

Moreover, nutritional scientist Professor Tim Spector, founder of the Zoe app, attested to the benefits of yoghurt for a healthy gut microbiome, emphasizing its positive impact on digestion and immune system strength. Additionally, he highlighted the value of choosing fat-containing yoghurts over fat-free products, citing a preference for their taste and their role in controlling sugar spikes.

Beyond its potential role in preventing colorectal cancer, yoghurt consumption has been linked to other health benefits, including improved bone health, lower blood pressure, and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Some studies have even suggested that regular yoghurt intake may aid in the prevention of type 2 diabetes and other diseases.

With the concerning rise in colorectal cancer cases, particularly among younger individuals, the significance of dietary factors in cancer prevention has come to the forefront. As colorectal cancer remains a prevalent and potentially preventable disease, making informed dietary choices, such as incorporating regular yoghurt consumption, has the potential to contribute to reducing the risk of this cancer.
