Drivers in Moreton-in-Marsh face a lengthy diversion due to essential resurfacing work on the A44 London Road. The road will be closed overnight from Monday, June 22, through Tuesday, June 30, running nightly from 8pm to 7am, with closures paused for the weekend of June 27 and 28.
Although the closure affects only a one-mile stretch of London Road, motorists will be redirected along a nearly 15-mile detour. The diversion, organized by Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team, sends traffic south on the A429 Roman Road to Stow-on-the-Wold, then east along the A436 past Daylesford, before reconnecting with the A44 between Salford and Little Compton.
Additionally, a short section of Evenlode Road within Moreton-in-Marsh will also be closed between its junctions with A44 London Road and Cotsmore Close. This prevents drivers from bypassing the closure via a shorter route.

Residents who usually park on the affected stretch must find alternative parking during closure hours, as vehicles obstructing the work may be towed. Pedestrian access to properties within the closure zone will be maintained, with safe passage allowed when possible.
The Highways team clarified the need for the closure in a letter to residents, citing the complexity of carriageway resurfacing that requires space for machinery and materials beyond the immediate work area. Despite the inconvenience, the work is critical for safety and is scheduled during night hours to minimize disruption.
