Cotswolds Manor House and Unique Collection to Feature on BBC’s Hidden Treasures

Snowshill Manor, a historic Cotswolds manor house once owned by the eccentric Gloucestershire collector Charles Wade, will be featured in the fourth episode of the acclaimed BBC Arts series, Hidden Treasures of the National Trust.

Nestled in a peaceful Cotswolds village, Snowshill Manor houses Wade’s remarkable collection of over 22,000 artifacts, ranging from musical instruments and clocks to an impressive 22 sets of Samurai armour. Among the highlights is a rare child-sized Samurai suit, which is being carefully conserved before a temporary exhibition at the British Museum.

Known as the Boy’s Samurai Suit, this piece is part of Wade’s internationally significant costume collection. Other notable garments are currently showcased in the manor’s Threads of Identity exhibition, highlighting the depth and quality of his array.

Hidden Treasures, a beloved series celebrating the dedication of experts and volunteers who maintain National Trust properties and collections, returns to BBC Two and iPlayer. Episode four, titled ‘Collectomania,’ delves into the psychology behind Victorian collecting habits, featuring Snowshill Manor alongside Calke Abbey in Derbyshire.

Jennifer Bowen, Collections & House Manager for Gloucestershire Property Group, expressed her enthusiasm: “We are delighted to be part of this year’s Hidden Treasures of the National Trust and to share Charles Wade’s extraordinary collection with a wider audience. Caring for such a vast and diverse collection requires immense effort, and it’s wonderful to showcase it nationally.”

The episode also highlights other fascinating aspects of Wade’s legacy, including a volunteer’s care for Wolf’s Cove—one of the UK’s earliest model villages—and conservation work on the Doorbell, crafted by Wade himself and restored by specialist Mike Flannery.

Hidden Treasures of the National Trust airs Friday, June 5, with all episodes available on iPlayer.
