Cotswolds Fish and Chip Shop Temporarily Removes Cod from Menu Amid Price Hikes

Wotton British Takeaway, a popular fish and chip shop located on the high street in Wotton-under-Edge, has announced it is temporarily removing cod from its menu due to rising costs. The shop explained that recent price increases for cod have forced them to make this difficult decision, but stressed that they hope the change will be only temporary.

In a statement, the takeaway said: “Unfortunately, we’ve been hit with another increase in the price of cod. Rather than passing that extra cost on to our customers, we’ve made the decision to temporarily remove cod from our menu. For the time being, we’ll be serving haddock only. We know cod is a firm favourite for many of you, so we’re sorry for any disappointment. We hope this is only temporary, and we’ll continue doing everything we can to keep our prices fair without compromising on quality. Thank you, as always, for your understanding and continued support.”

This move follows a price rise in April, when the cost of a portion of cod was increased to £11.50. At that time, Wotton British Takeaway noted on Facebook that the price of cod had “tripled compared to a few years ago,” describing the increases as “relentless.”

Currently, a portion of haddock or plaice costs £12.60, scampi is priced at £10, and chips start from £4.30 for a regular-sized serving suitable for up to two people.

Recent data from Seafish, the organisation supporting the seafood industry, revealed that the average price of a portion of cod and chips in the UK has risen to £11.41. Haddock and chips now typically cost around £10.29.

Seafish’s report highlights that rising costs for key ingredients such as fish, potatoes, oil, and energy have put pressure on fish and chip shop owners nationwide. Many are adapting by diversifying menus with alternatives like kebabs, pizzas, or masala fish, or by streamlining offerings to improve efficiency.

Jennifer Robson, author of the Seafish report, emphasised the ongoing popularity of fish and chips in the UK: “Our report confirms that fish and chips is very much alive and kicking in the UK – it remains one of the nation’s most iconic and recognisable meals, enjoyed by millions of people every year.”

She added that fish and chip shops play a vital role in local communities and economies and are important in exposing the public to a wider variety of seafood beyond traditional choices like cod and haddock. Lesser-known species such as plaice, skate, and pollock provide excellent alternatives and help broaden consumer options.

Despite the temporary removal of cod from its menu, Wotton British Takeaway continues to receive support from loyal customers. One commented, “Haddock it is then! Thank you for thinking of us, that’s a ‘reel’ good decision.” Another added, “Haddock tastes better, in my opinion. Good move.”
