Cotswolds-based comedian Cerys Nelmes has returned to the UK after spending five challenging months detained in Istanbul due to a shoplifting accusation.
On July 22, Cerys was arrested in Turkey after leaving a Zara store without paying for items. In an emotional Facebook video she shared at the time, she insisted she had promptly returned the items and offered to pay, but was instead denied food, water, and access to basic rights before being taken into custody.
During her initial court appearance, a translator informed her she could face up to three years in prison. A viral video showed her exiting the store with the contested items, sparking widespread attention.
Yesterday (December 17), Cerys revealed that her hearing was nearly delayed until January because the presiding judge was signed off sick. However, authorities managed to assign a different judge, who ultimately lifted her travel ban.
Cerys explained, “The original judge was on a month-long leave, which meant postponing my hearing. That judge had previously refused to lift my travel ban, so when they found a new judge, we felt hopeful. After waiting for them to finish their docket, my travel ban was finally overturned.”
Overcome with emotion, she expressed, “I’m coming home tomorrow—it hasn’t fully sunk in yet. Thank you all for your support. I’m finally coming home.”
After arriving in the Cotswolds, Cerys posted a heartfelt video from her home, sharing her relief but also hinting at the ordeal she endured. “I’ve just got home after five months. Istanbul was intense—at one point I was taken away by Interpol and thought I wouldn’t make my flight. But here I am. I’m looking forward to relaxing with some Yorkshire tea, watching TV, and spending time with my family and dogs.”
Supporters quickly flooded her social media with messages of joy and relief. One fan commented, “You’ve probably never been so glad to be back in the UK! So happy you’re home.” Another added, “Delighted for you, Cerys! Welcome back!”
Cerys Nelmes, a firefighter-turned-comedian who often performs in Bristol, now looks forward to putting this difficult chapter behind her and returning to her passion for comedy.
