Wotton British Takeaway, a popular fish and chip shop on the high street in Wotton-under-Edge, has temporarily removed cod from its menu due to rising prices. The owners explained that rather than passing on the additional cost to their customers, they have decided to serve haddock exclusively for the time being.
In a statement, the chippy said: “Unfortunately, we’ve been hit with another increase in the price of cod. Rather than passing that extra cost on to our customers, we’ve made the decision to temporarily remove cod from our menu. For the time being, we’ll be serving haddock only. We know cod is a firm favourite for many of you, so we’re sorry for any disappointment. We hope this is only temporary, and we’ll continue doing everything we can to keep our prices fair without compromising on quality. Thank you, as always, for your understanding and continued support.”
This change follows a price rise in April when the portion cost of cod was increased to £11.50. The owners noted that the cost of cod has tripled compared to a few years ago, leading to relentless price increases. Currently, a portion of haddock or plaice costs £12.60, scampi is priced at £10, and regular-sized chips start from £4.30.

Recent figures from Seafish, published in June, reveal that the average price of a portion of cod and chips in the UK has risen to £11.41, while the average price for haddock and chips is around £10.29. Rising costs for key ingredients such as fish, potatoes, oil, and energy are impacting fish and chip shop owners nationwide. Many are diversifying their menus with items like kebabs, pizzas, or masala fish, or alternatively reducing menu options to improve efficiency.
Jennifer Robson, author of the Seafish report, commented: “Our report confirms that fish and chips remain a beloved and iconic British meal, enjoyed by millions every year. Fish and chip shops play a vital role in local economies and communities and provide an important way for consumers to enjoy a wide range of seafood. Beyond traditional cod and haddock, shops introduce customers to lesser-known species such as plaice, skate, and pollock, which offer excellent quality and more variety.”
Among local patrons of Wotton British Takeaway, many have expressed understanding and ongoing support for the chippy despite the temporary loss of cod. One customer remarked: “Haddock it is then! Thank you for thinking of us, that’s a ‘reel’ good decision.” Another added: “Haddock tastes better, in my opinion. Good move.”
Wotton British Takeaway remains committed to offering quality fish and chips while managing the challenges of rising food costs, hopeful that cod will return to the menu in the near future.
