Cotswold Snail Trail Returns Bigger and Better Than Ever

This May half term, the Cotswolds welcomes back the beloved Roman Snail Trail at Chedworth Roman Villa, blending captivating Roman history with slimy, hands-on fun. Inspired by Helix Pomatia—the edible snail introduced to Britain by the Romans—this family-friendly event offers an engaging day out filled with educational and entertaining activities.

Running from Saturday, May 24 to Sunday, June 1, the trail returns with an expanded program, building on the success of last year. Against the backdrop of one of Britain’s finest Roman villas, visitors can explore interactive challenges that illuminate the fascinating connection between ancient Romans and these enduring creatures, still found among the villa’s remains nearly 2,000 years later.

James Ball, senior visitor experience officer, shares: “After last year’s overwhelming enthusiasm, we’ve added even more interactive snail activities. Families can enjoy our new Giant Snail Slip ‘n Slide outdoor board game, giggle through ‘Snail Twister,’ and test their coordination with the ‘Snail Shuffle’ challenge. Our popular human snail races are back, where participants don snail shells and eye stalks to race each other around the arena.”

New features for 2024 include the ‘Snailed It’ beanbag toss and a magnifying station where children can examine authentic Roman snail shells. The imaginative ‘Snail Mail’ activity invites kids to send creative messages to ancient villa residents, adding an element of storytelling and discovery.

Returning author and illustrator Priscilla Burris brings back Pom the Snail, whose adventures delighted families last year. Priscilla explains, “Pom is back to guide visitors through a snail-paced journey of the villa’s history via our new audio tour. Children will love searching for Pom hiding within museum artefacts and playing snail-themed board games in the Play Pavilion.”

Guests are encouraged to bring picnics or enjoy refreshments at the on-site café. Snail-themed souvenirs are also available in the gift shop. The event runs daily from 10am to 4:30pm with regular admission fees; National Trust members receive free entry and no booking is necessary.
