Cotswold MP Roz Savage Reflects on Her Solo Atlantic Rowing Adventure 20 Years Later

South Cotswolds MP Roz Savage recently shared insights into her remarkable solo row across the Atlantic Ocean, commemorating the 20th anniversary of this life-changing journey. Elected as a Liberal Democrat MP in 2024, Dr. Savage is a pioneering adventurer, holding four Guinness World Records as the first and only woman to row solo across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

Long before her political career, Roz embarked on a challenge that reshaped her outlook. Setting off from La Gomera on November 30, 2005, she braved the stormiest Atlantic year in recorded history, arriving in Antigua on March 13, 2006—after 103 days alone at sea.

Reflecting on that era, she recalled, “It was the stormiest year since records began, with 28 named storms, including Hurricane Katrina. It seems I chose stormy times for both my voyages and politics.”

Her environmental awakening began in 2003 during a pilgrimage to a shrinking glacier in Peru. “Seeing the glacier diminish made climate change real for me. It sparked a determination to act.”

In 2004, she envisioned rowing solo across oceans as a platform to raise environmental awareness. What followed was 14 intense months of preparation—learning seamanship, sourcing a boat outfitted with solar panels, and equipping herself for self-sufficiency.

Despite setbacks like Tropical Storm Delta delaying her departure and numerous equipment failures—including broken oars and a lost satellite phone—Roz persevered. She managed 12-hour rowing shifts daily, often battling overwhelming seasickness and isolation, with only her blog as a link to the outside world.

“The first night was the hardest—pitch dark, waves crashing, and the boat tossing wildly. It took weeks to trust the craft and accept the immense solitude.”

Her journey was as much an inner battle as a physical one. “I confronted my fears and doubts head-on. It was transformative.”

Crossing into the Caribbean after over three months, the sight of Antigua’s shores was an emotional triumph. Upon arrival, she was warmly welcomed by locals and greeted by her mother, celebrating her extraordinary achievement.

The experience also prepared Roz for her parliamentary career. “The challenges of ocean rowing gave me resilience for the overwhelming start in Westminster. It reassured me that I had faced great trials before.”

Two decades on, Roz remains deeply committed to environmental advocacy, balancing realism with optimism. “We’ve made strides with renewables, plastic reduction, and organic food, but we still face serious environmental challenges. I believe in tipping points—and that with a shift in mindset, rapid positive change is possible.”

Dr. Savage embodies a “stubborn optimism,” confident that society can protect nature, on which we all depend, for a sustainable future.
