Cotswold Lib Dems Win Council Seat from Greens in By-Election

In a recent by-election for The Rissingtons ward on the Cotswold District Council, the Liberal Democrats have reclaimed a seat from the Green Party. Craig Thurling emerged victorious, marking a significant gain for the Lib Dems in this picturesque part of the Cotswolds.

The by-election, held yesterday following the resignation of Green Party councillor Andrew Maclean due to health reasons, drew a voter turnout of 42.8%. Thurling secured 321 votes, surpassing his closest rivals from the Conservatives (268), Reform UK (221), and the Greens (47). Notably, the Lib Dems had not contested this seat in either the 2019 or 2023 elections, both won previously by Andrew Maclean.

Upon election, Councillor Thurling expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m thrilled to have been elected. It’s an honour to represent such a beautiful part of the Cotswolds. I thank everyone who placed their trust in me.”

He further pledged to work hard for all constituents, including those who supported other candidates or chose not to vote. Thurling’s campaign was centered around three key priorities: addressing the cost of living, safeguarding local hospital services, and improving road repairs. He affirmed his commitment to using his council position to advocate on these issues and to represent residents' interests effectively.

Following this election, the council’s political composition stands at 22 Liberal Democrats, 10 Conservatives, 1 Green Party councillor, and 1 Independent.

Jane Portman, council chief executive and returning officer, commented: “Thank you to all candidates, supporters, and voters in The Rissingtons by-election. Your participation is vital in shaping the future of our district. We look forward to working with Councillor Thurling to benefit residents and communities throughout the Cotswolds.”
