Cotswold Community Voices Concerns Over 120-Home Development Proposal Near Mickleton

A proposed development of 120 new homes on over 12 acres north east of Mickleton, near Chipping Campden, has sparked a wave of local opposition. Brookworth Homes aims to create a new housing estate designed to blend with the village’s existing streetscape and preserve the natural greenery.

Planners emphasize that the development would offer modern, comfortable two-storey homes that respect the surrounding environment. According to the application documents, the project is a “well-considered and sustainable solution” intended to address the housing shortage within the Cotswold District.

Despite these assurances, more than 30 residents have formally objected. Joanne Piper Bourn highlighted concerns about the loss of agricultural land and open space, as well as the impact on the historic views around Meon Hill. She also expressed deep worries regarding local infrastructure, stating, “There’s no doctors, no post office, no regular public transport, the school is close to full and has no way to expand its current footprint. Infrastructure can’t cope now so certainly can’t cope with more.”

Other residents echoed these concerns. James Bell called the development an “absolute non-starter,” stressing the threat to local views and community life. “There is absolutely no need for more homes in this part of Mickleton,” he said. “An alternative site with less impact on residents should be found. Neighbours and I will strongly oppose this.”

Local politics also play a role. Cotswold District Councillor Tom Stowe noted recent Government mandates have changed housing delivery targets, leaving the council without a five-year housing land supply. This shift raises the threshold for refusing planning applications, complicating efforts to block developments. Councillor Stowe urged residents to submit feedback through the Cotswold District Council portal to ensure all voices are heard during the decision-making process.

To facilitate community input, Mickleton Parish Council has scheduled two public meetings: a consultation on July 23 and an extraordinary session on July 30, both at King George’s Hall starting at 7 pm. These forums will provide residents with a platform to discuss the plans and express their views directly.
