Costco has confirmed that its highly anticipated new warehouse in Gloucester is expected to open soon, with new signage at the site declaring “opening soon”. The wholesale retail giant announced on its Instagram page last week, “The wait is over… you guessed it! We’re opening soon in Gloucester!”.
Currently, several job vacancies are being advertised for the new location, including positions for an optometrist and an audiologist, both with application deadlines of 18 August. While Costco has yet to announce an exact opening date, construction company Glencar provided an update in February stating that the warehouse will cover 13,000 square metres as part of a multi-million-pound development. This development will also include a Costco fuel station.
A spokesperson from Glencar said: “Once complete, the development will include a nine-pump petrol station with a tyre fitting bay, 612 customer parking spaces, and a new vehicle access off Chancel Close. The steel frame is now complete, earthworks are nearing completion, and cladding and roofing are underway, with the next milestone being the achievement of a watertight building envelope.”

The site is located on Eastern Avenue at the former Interbrew location, renamed Access Park. Initial plans for the site were approved in 2020, allowing for several units including drive-thrus. In 2024, when planning permission was granted to Firstplan Ltd to redevelop the site, Costco announced that the new warehouse would create 250 jobs, many of which are expected to be recruited locally.
Costco operates by membership only, primarily serving specific employment groups, with no general public access. The closest existing Costco warehouses are in Bristol and Coventry.
Planning permission for the main warehouse was granted in April 2025, and minor design refinements were submitted to Gloucester City Council last month; these remain under consideration. Additionally, a public notice dated May 2026 states that Costco Wholesale UK Limited has applied for a premises licence permitting the sale of alcohol for off-site consumption between 8am and 11pm daily at the Gloucester site.
Although no official opening date has been confirmed, customer comments on Instagram suggest a possible opening in November, with some noting delays due to ongoing roadworks on Eastern Avenue. Glencar’s statement indicates the project is on track for completion in 2026, with close collaboration between their team, Costco, and other stakeholders to maintain the construction schedule.
Costco has been contacted for further information regarding the opening date.
