Controversy over Massive Solar Farm Proposal

A proposal for a massive solar panel farm capable of providing electricity for up to 18,000 homes annually is currently under review. Luminous Energy Ltd seeks approval from South Gloucestershire Council to build the Cattybrook Solar Farm near Almondsbury. Despite its potential to boost renewable energy locally, the project has sparked opposition, primarily concerned with its impact on the surrounding landscape and equestrian safety.

The council’s development management committee is set to decide on the application on Thursday, April 17. Spanning 83 hectares, the solar farm would encompass 23 agricultural fields and include not only panels but also infrastructure such as access roads, a control room, storage facilities, and security measures.

Critics, including two parish councils, have voiced fears that the solar farm would “blight views” and pose risks to equestrians due to the construction traffic crossing public bridleways. The impact on countryside aesthetics and concerns over the capacity of local lanes to handle construction vehicles have further fueled the opposition.

However, planning officers have recommended approval, emphasizing the positive contribution the solar farm could make to reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. The proponents have also highlighted the potential for local financial benefits, including a community fund to support initiatives and help mitigate energy costs for residents and businesses.

As the region strives to increase renewable energy production to combat climate change, the decision on the Cattybrook Solar Farm will be crucial in balancing energy needs with environmental and community considerations.
