A digitally created video using artificial intelligence features Gloucester Mayor Ashley Bowkett in a controversial portrayal that has drawn strong criticism from local politicians and residents. The video, posted on Facebook by Community Independents leader Alastair Chambers, seemingly shows Mayor Bowkett laughing while refusing to call a special council meeting to address significant financial overspending.
The timing of the video’s release coincided with blocked efforts to convene a public session concerning Gloucester City Council’s overspend this fiscal year. Liberal Democrats have condemned the video as “appalling,” characterizing it as “petty, vindictive, and completely unacceptable.”
A Liberal Democrat spokesperson emphasized the video’s disrespect toward the mayor’s role, stating, “Gloucester deserves councillors focused on serving the city and its residents—not attention-seeking stunts.” The spokesperson also highlighted the significance of the mayor’s office as a symbol of civic unity above party lines, deeming the video an insult to the entire city.

In response to criticism, Alastair Chambers defended his use of AI technology as a means to reveal what he described as a lack of transparency. Chambers explained that his call for a special meeting to investigate a missing £8 million had received cross-party support but was initially blocked exclusively by Mayor Bowkett. He stated, “I used modern tools to shine a light where others preferred darkness.”
Shortly after the AI video was shared online, Mayor Bowkett reversed his position and agreed to hold the requested special meeting. Chambers hailed the decision as a victory for transparency and accountability, asserting that the taxpayers deserve openness from their elected officials.
The controversy has raised questions about standards of conduct within the council. While the City Council has not publicly commented, Lib Dem representatives have urged the issue be reviewed under formal complaints and standards procedures.
