Wholesale retail giant Costco is making steady progress on its new 13,000 square meter warehouse in Gloucester, expected to be completed in 2026. Glencar, the construction partner, is developing the multi-million-pound Costco club and adjoining fuel station on the former Interbrew site along Eastern Avenue.
This project marks Costco’s inaugural warehouse in Gloucestershire. After just three months of construction, the steel frame is complete and earthworks are nearly finished. Cladding and roofing are underway, with the next major milestone being a fully watertight building envelope.
The new facility will feature a nine-pump petrol station with a tyre fitting bay, 612 customer parking spaces, and a dedicated vehicle access off Chancel Close. The warehouse itself boasts a wide-span steel portal frame, a striking entrance canopy, vertical composite cladding, and a roof-mounted solar panel array emphasizing sustainability.

In parallel with the main building, extensive external works are progressing. These include car parking, HGV hardstanding areas, drainage systems, utility services, and other civil engineering tasks across the broader 44,000 square meter site.
Roy Jones, Managing Director at Glencar, highlighted the complexity of the project: “This is a substantial scheme combining structural steel, civils, infrastructure, and sustainability features in a live delivery environment. We are collaborating closely with Costco and the project team to stay on schedule for completion in 2026.”
Paul Landen, Costco’s Construction Director for Europe, added: “Glencar is doing excellent work as construction advances. This facility is a key addition to our UK network, and we look forward to serving our members with a top-quality warehouse next year.”
Gloucester City Council approved the plans in December 2024, with site work starting the previous year. Local leaders have welcomed the investment. Labour MP Alex McIntyre remarked, “Costco’s new store will bring essential jobs and breathe new life into an area that has been dormant for too long.”
Councillor Andrew Gravells recalled his early involvement: “Years ago, Costco sought information to assess Gloucester as a possible location. I’m proud to have supported them and witnessed the project’s progress. Costco will bring jobs, training, and value, making this a win-win for our city.”
