Construction Begins on 82 New Affordable Homes in Cotswold Village

Construction has officially commenced on a new development of 82 affordable homes in South Cerney, a charming village in the Cotswolds. Housing association Bromford is revitalizing Berkeley Close by demolishing 38 aging properties and garages and replacing them with modern, energy-efficient residences.

The project is unfolding in two stages. The initial phase involved the demolition of the 38 former structures, and now work is underway to build the first of the 56 new homes planned to take their place. These new homes will be equipped with solar panels, battery storage, and air source heat pumps, ensuring an impressive EPC A rating. This makes them some of the most energy-efficient homes Bromford has constructed to date.

The previous 1960s-era homes were built with outdated construction methods and had become increasingly dilapidated. Bromford’s new development addresses this by offering a mix of one- and two-bedroom bungalows and flats, as well as houses ranging from one to four bedrooms. In total, 63 homes will be available for rent, with 19 offered through shared ownership, meeting a clear local demand for affordable housing.

Project manager Millie Nicholls expressed her enthusiasm for the milestone: “Completing the demolition and starting construction on new homes marks a fresh chapter for South Cerney. We’re committed to providing warm, safe, and energy-efficient homes that will allow local families and individuals to stay rooted in their community.”

Local construction firm E G Carter, a family-run business with previous experience working alongside Bromford, is leading the building efforts. Mathew Vye, Residential Director at E G Carter & Co Ltd, highlighted the project’s focus on sustainability and community benefits: “We’re proud to partner with Bromford in delivering high-quality, affordable homes that prioritize long-term environmental and social impact. Beginning work on this development is an exciting step forward.”

The first families are expected to move into their new homes next year, signalling a positive future for Berkeley Close and the wider South Cerney community.
