Confidence and Preparation Key for Forest Green Rovers Ahead of Southend Play-Off Semi-Final

Forest Green Rovers manager Steve Cotterill has expressed strong confidence in his squad’s readiness ahead of the pivotal National League play-off semi-final against Southend United at the New Lawn on Wednesday.

Reflecting on the intensive two-and-a-half weeks of training, Cotterill revealed that every available player has impressed enough to be considered for the starting lineup. “I feel as though I could pick any of them,” he said. “They would all be ready to go, maybe bar one or two. The professionalism and effort they’ve shown have given me plenty to think about.”

Cotterill also reflected on the club’s remarkable turnaround since his appointment 15 months ago. After a difficult period that included relegation, Forest Green have bounced back with a spirited squad blending new signings and existing players. “It’s a huge testament to the team’s character. Around half the squad experienced those tough years before I arrived, so it’s about everyone contributing to this positive momentum.”

A slight fitness concern remains over defender Ryan Inniss, who was substituted at the end of the regular season due to a knock. Cotterill says the decision on Inniss will be a late one: “He’s the only player we need to assess closely before the game.”

The Rovers will face a confident Southend side who progressed after a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Rochdale. Cotterill highlighted the intensity of that match, which saw fans from both clubs passionately involved. “That game was tense and emotional. Southend showed great resilience, but we are ready for the challenge. We’ve studied their play closely and can’t wait for kick-off.”

The two teams met twice this season, both matches ending in 2-2 draws with Forest Green taking the lead on both occasions. Cotterill acknowledged the competitive nature of these encounters and stressed the importance of sharpening their performance. “Those were close games — we will focus on keeping the good parts and improving where we fell short.”

With 16 days off after their 1-1 draw against Hartlepool, Forest Green undertook a “mini pre-season” to maintain sharpness. Cotterill admits arranging additional friendly matches was challenging and potentially risky but is satisfied with the team’s condition heading into the semi-final: “It’s the longest preparation I’ve had before a game, but we’ve used it well and are confident.”

The home advantage could play a crucial role, as Forest Green have nearly sold out two stands, with Southend’s away fans also filling their allocation. Cotterill emphasized the importance of crowd support: “The fans are vital. We want them behind us to drive the players on and create an electric atmosphere. The more supporters, the better — we hope to give them plenty to cheer about.”

Finally, on the play-off format, a single-leg tie at the higher-ranked team’s ground, Cotterill acknowledged the benefit of home advantage but remained focused on his team’s preparation. “Playing at home is preferable, no doubt, but we respect Southend and have prepared thoroughly. We’ve navigated the challenges this season well and look forward to the test ahead.”
