Concerns have been voiced about the leadership stability at Gloucester’s GL1 leisure centre amid reports of multiple resignations. This comes as a £multi-million refurbishment of the facility, located in Bruton Way, is set to commence next month.
The Gloucester City Council has emphasised that the overhaul aims to transform GL1 into a “fantastic” 21st-century leisure facility. The planned improvements include updated equipment, enhanced accessibility, and a better experience for users.
However, opposition councillors have expressed unease over the apparent turmoil within the centre’s management. Labour councillor Karen James (Kingsway) urged the Liberal Democrat administration to act swiftly to prevent the investment from being undermined by ongoing leadership issues.

Cllr James said, “I am concerned to hear of the resignation of the GL1 manager after a very short time in post. Reports suggest multiple resignations at the centre throughout this year, indicating serious issues with the workplace culture.”
She added, “With a substantial council-funded regeneration about to get underway, council leaders must quickly address these problems. GL1 has the potential to be a flagship facility for Gloucester, yet it seems to be struggling from one crisis to another without the needed leadership to guide it through this vital phase.”
A spokesperson for Gloucester City Council reiterated the importance of the investment, stating, “The refurbishment at GL1 is part of a broader £8 million commitment to enhance leisure facilities across the city, including updates to Oxstalls Sports Park.”
“We are pleased work is imminent on this significant project. The upgrades will ensure the centre meets modern standards, providing better health and wellbeing opportunities for Gloucester’s communities,” the spokesperson added.
Previously, a council cabinet member acknowledged in response to similar concerns last month that the leisure centre was in “dire need of an upgrade.”
Freedom Leisure, which manages GL1 on behalf of the city council, has been contacted for comment but has yet to respond.
