Concerns Over Lack of Weeding Leave Gloucester Docks Looking Run-Down

Residents and officials have raised concerns about a growing weed problem in Gloucester Docks, which they say is causing the area to look neglected and run-down. Labour councillor Karen James highlighted that the issue extends beyond the Docks to locations such as Kingsway and Quedgeley, noting a record number of complaints about weeds on footpaths.

Cllr James brought up the problem at a recent Gloucester City Council meeting held at North Warehouse. While the council purchased a second Hako weed ripper machine at the end of 2025 to address weed clearance, she expressed frustration that it has yet to be used effectively in areas like Kingsway. “We haven’t seen it in Kingsway at all,” she said, adding that especially the vicinity around North Warehouse is “in a terrible state with weeds,” and overall the situation “looks really sad.”

Speaking to Gloucestershire Live, Cllr James lamented the lack of adequate weed clearance across the city. “It seems the city council can’t even keep the grounds around its own offices clear. The Docks are one of Gloucester’s key attractions, and seeing it overrun by weeds sends the wrong message to both visitors and residents.”

Cllr James plans to raise her concerns again at the upcoming full council meeting later this month.

Council leader Jeremy Hilton acknowledged the issue during the meeting, revealing he has contacted the head of the service to schedule weed ripping in problematic areas like Kingsholm. “There are some areas where the weed situation is not perfect,” he admitted. “We have two machines, and generally cleanliness in the city is good, especially in the city centre, but it’s not flawless. I intend to inspect Kingsway myself to help resolve these problems.”
