Gloucester city centre is facing safety concerns with a pedestrian crossing closure, as roadworks cause hazardous conditions for pedestrians traveling between the city centre and the Docks. Councillor Rebecca Trimnell, representing the area on Gloucester City Council, has raised red flags about the current crossing layout and is urging Gloucestershire County Council to make it more accessible.
The closure, located at the junction of Southgate Street, Kimbrose Way, and Commercial Road, has led to difficulties for pedestrians to safely navigate the route, especially as they approach the Quays. Cllr Trimnell emphasized the risks posed to pedestrians, including those with disabilities, and how the current setup is deterring residents, students, and visitors from using the crossing.
Responding to these concerns, a representative from Gloucestershire County Council assured that they will carefully monitor the situation and implement necessary improvements during the course of the works. The current traffic management has been put in place to prioritize the safety of both the public and the workforce. Signs have been installed to guide pedestrians through the altered routes, with the commitment to address any issues as the project progresses.
