The sale of Gloucestershire Airport has hit a snag, raising concerns as yet another deadline has passed without completion. Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucester City Council, joint owners of the Staverton airport, had aimed to finalize the sale to Horizon Aero Group by the end of January. However, February has arrived and the transaction remains incomplete.
The councils announced their preferred buyer for the 375-acre site last July and agreed on a sale price exceeding the £25 million asking figure. Despite this, the final stages of the sale have encountered delays, sparking speculation over possible complications.
In a joint statement released in late January, both councils described the sale process as “extremely complex,” underscoring that such transactions take time. They confirmed that all parties are actively working towards closing the deal and expressed optimism about reaching a conclusion soon.

Nevertheless, some local officials are growing increasingly uneasy. Labour councillor Terry Pullen of Moreland voiced his frustration: “I’m seriously worried as the sale of Gloucestershire Airport is dragging on and on. Deadlines have come and gone — I was told it would be sold by Christmas, then by the end of January, but neither happened.”
Cllr. Pullen plans to request an update at the upcoming cabinet meeting and is keen to hear explanations for the delays. He also highlighted the financial pressures involved, noting that the council is seeking a £15.5 million government bailout and that proceeds from the airport sale are expected to help repay this debt.
“As far as I know, there’s no alternative plan if the sale doesn’t complete,” he added, expressing uncertainty about the airport’s future should the deal fall through.
Council representatives reiterated their commitment to transparent communication and collaboration with Horizon Aero Group to finalize the sale. They assured the public that further updates will be provided when appropriate.
