The incident involved the arrest of five men in Whelford on suspicion of explosive and terrorism offences, following reports from a local farmer who alerted authorities after noticing three suspicious vehicles approaching the airbase.
The incident prompted the declaration of a major incident and the evacuation of 85 nearby households. While Iran’s London embassy has categorically denied involvement, condemning the allegations as “unfounded and malicious speculations,” local political figures have expressed serious concern about the broader implications for the community.
Councillor Paul Hodgkinson, Liberal Democrat member for Bourton-on-the-Water and Northleach and Gloucestershire County Council’s fire and rescue cabinet member, described the situation as “very worrying.” He highlighted the impact of international decisions on the local area, stating, “We are now feeling the impact of wider political decisions that were made in the USA, these things are now coming home to roost here in an alarming way.”

Councillor Hodgkinson criticised past governmental choices, including the UK’s role in facilitating US military operations through RAF Fairford, and called for enhanced security measures around the base to reassure and protect local residents. South Cotswolds MP Roz Savage echoed these concerns, emphasising that Sunday’s event was the most serious the area has experienced. Since the US Air Force began operating from RAF Fairford in support of defensive operations in Iran earlier this year, Savage has regularly raised security issues with the Government.
“Local residents have endured a difficult summer of noise disruption, congestion, and fuel smells,” the MP said. “This is the most serious incident the area has faced, and I will continue to liaise with the base and Government to prioritise local safety and seek clarity on how such a threat materialised.”
Conservative county councillor Dom Morris, representing Fairford and Lechlade-on-Thames, acknowledged the community’s shock and resilience. He reaffirmed support for the personnel stationed at RAF Fairford, describing them as “our American brothers and sisters, who were clearly the target of this attack.”
Morris reflected on the broader implications of defence policy, noting a disconnect between national rhetoric and actual military spending. “This gap has appeared as we have distanced ourselves from our greatest ally, the US, during a time when international alliances are crucial,” he said. He encouraged the community to support one another, honoured the local farmer’s vigilance, and assured moral support would be offered locally.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed the incident, acknowledging the deep concern it has caused both locally and nationally. He expressed gratitude to the emergency and security services and confirmed he would chair a Cobra meeting to assess the situation thoroughly.
