Concerns Arise Over Low Morale at Gloucestershire Police as Six Department Heads Resign

The resignation of six high-ranking officials at Gloucestershire Constabulary in recent months has raised alarm about the prevalent low morale within the police force.

Even prior to the announcement of job cuts, reports indicated that morale was already suffering. A staff survey published last month by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire revealed that the morale among the 495 surveyed employees was at a mere four out of ten. In certain departments, this figure dropped as low as three. The force also faces a funding gap of £12.3m, resulting in the upcoming reduction of 60 police staff roles, including 30 to 40 police community support officers.

The suspension of chief constable Rod Hansen in October of the previous year further exacerbated the already dismal morale, with insiders describing it as being at “rock bottom.” A police source attributes the recent wave of resignations to everyone being fed up with the prevailing low morale and the administration of the force. They emphasized the importance of the public being aware of the dire situation at the constabulary.

In the span of the last six months, several department heads have tendered their resignations. These include the heads of learning and development, estates and support services, public feedback team, and transport services, as well as the head of legal. According to reports, none of them were made redundant, underscoring the severity of the situation.

The Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesperson, while emphasizing their commitment to fostering a positive work environment, noted that employees may choose to leave for various reasons, such as career advancement or personal changes.
