The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, and her daughter Princess Charlotte delivered a remarkable piano duet at Kate’s Christmas carol concert, impressing even the composer of the piece. Erland Cooper, the Scottish composer behind Holm Sound, revealed he was pleasantly surprised to learn that the royal pair would be performing his music together.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Cooper shared, “I’d had a chat with the princess earlier in the year and knew she enjoyed playing this piece with family. Being invited to Windsor Castle last week to hear the princesses perform it was such a surprise. They were already so good, I didn’t need to guide them.”
The intimate duet saw Kate play the piece using only her left hand, while Charlotte played with her right, a beautiful and poignant arrangement filmed in Windsor Castle’s Inner Hall. Cooper described Princess Charlotte as “very confident,” praising her delicate and poised performance.

Holm Sound was originally written by Cooper for his own mother, also named Charlotte, as a reflection on motherhood and the cyclical nature of family relationships. Cooper explained, “It’s about how we see our parents in our children’s eyes, and when you look at your mother and grandmother, you see your children—a full circle moment.”
The duet performance was part of the Together At Christmas concert aired on ITV1 on Christmas Eve. The event also featured other festive highlights, including Chiwetel Ejiofor’s reading of “A Visit From St. Nicholas” and a heartfelt message from actress Kate Winslet about the power of love during the holiday season.
Kate Middleton’s emphasis on the importance of connection was highlighted throughout the concert. Guests arriving at Westminster Abbey saw children—including Charlotte and Prince George—creating paper chains bearing their names on a “Connection Tree.” Kate’s own letter accompanying the service reflected on how Christmas reminds us “how deeply our lives are woven together.”
The warmth and joy shared by mother and daughter during their performance was evident as they smiled at each other, embodying the spirit of togetherness that defined this special Christmas celebration.
