Following the Met Office’s extension of its heat alert, more schools across Gloucestershire and the UK are set to close on Friday, June 26. The country faces another day of intense heat, with temperatures forecasted to reach up to 38C in certain areas, accompanied by ongoing thunderstorm and heat warnings.
The recent heatwave has already caused significant issues nationwide, including a large wildfire in the Peak District where temperatures hit 36.7C. Wales recorded its highest ever June temperature of 35.6C at Cardiff’s Bute Park, while Scotland experienced a peak of 31.2C in Threave.
Professor Stephen Belcher CBE, chief scientist at the Met Office, emphasized the severity of this weather event. “The heatwave this week is significant, marked by a Red Extreme Heat warning. Climate change driven by human activity has increased both the likelihood and intensity of such events. Experiencing these temperatures in the UK in June is alarming and highlights the serious health risks related to heat stress, alongside disruptions to transport, energy, and water supplies,” he said.
