Comparing Gloucester Services and Michaelwood Services on the M5: Which is Worth Your Stop?

Gloucester Services Farmshop and Kitchen on the M5 is a name familiar to many, even beyond Gloucestershire. Managed by the Westmorland Family group, this celebrated motorway stop just past Junction 12 attracts around four million visitors annually and has repeatedly been named the UK’s best motorway service station.

According to a Which.co.uk survey conducted last year, Gloucester Services retained its 2026 title with an impressive 85% overall customer satisfaction. It earned five-star ratings in cleanliness, facilities, food and drink quality, and the availability of outdoor space.

Yet, Gloucester Services isn’t the only option on this stretch of the M5. Just 15 miles away lies Michaelwood Services, run by Welcome Break, the country’s second-largest motorway service operator.

For those seeking a quick stretch or a simple pit stop, how does Michaelwood compare to the lauded Gloucester Services? Here’s a firsthand look at both.

Starting from Bristol and heading north, Michaelwood Services, located just past Junction 14, offers a sprawling car park with space for over 250 cars plus around 20 electric vehicle charging points. Parking is free for two hours; beyond that, car tariffs reach £15 for stays up to 24 hours, while larger vehicles like HGVs or coaches incur higher fees.

The outdoor parking area is large but basic, situated close to the motorway, so the noise and traffic are clearly noticeable. While wooden bench seating provides a small outdoor respite, it lacks the peaceful atmosphere motorists might crave after long drives.

In contrast, Gloucester Services provides free parking for up to three hours, with fees of £14 for cars and various rates for larger vehicles for longer stays. Surprisingly, despite its accolades, it is not significantly more expensive to park, making it an economical choice.

The setting at Gloucester is notably more tranquil. Nestled amidst rolling green hills, it cleverly masks noise and views of the motorway traffic, offering a scenic and restorative environment to pause.

Michaelwood offers standard motorway options: familiar fast-food outlets like KFC, Burger King, Subway, and Starbucks, plus a WH Smith and a Little Waitrose. There’s also a Game Zone for entertainment and a Krispy Kreme display greeting visitors at the entrance. Food prices here are mid-range—sandwiches and wraps range between £3.95 and £5.80, and a ham and cheese sandwich with water can be had for just over £6.

However, Michaelwood feels somewhat cramped inside, with a limited shopping selection compared to other Welcome Break locations that sometimes feature sit-down restaurants.

Gloucester Services takes a different approach, focusing on local Cotswold produce with its Farmshop and canteen-style restaurant. Partnering with over 130 local suppliers within 30 miles, it offers high-quality cheeses, wines, ciders, baked goods, books, clothing, and gifts. Prices are reasonable—for example, a fresh fig loaf from a local bakery is £3.95, and a lemon meringue cruffin costs £3.60.

To compare food offerings, a bacon and sausage bap at Michaelwood costs £5.99. The sandwich was prepared simply, with a dry roll and limited sauce, plus two sausages and one piece of bacon that was a bit tough. In contrast, Gloucester’s equivalent bap is £6.85 but was unavailable during my visit, so I tried a £5.85 sausage roll instead. It featured flaky, buttery pastry and a moist sausage filling, complementing a more pleasant outdoor setting beside a pond with ducks.

Gloucester Services shines as more than just a stop. Behind the main building lies a nature reserve with benches overlooking panoramic views of the Forest of Dean and Robinswood Hill. Visitors can enjoy a herb garden with aromatic plants and watch bees at work in bee houses. Noise from the motorway barely reaches this peaceful haven.

While Michaelwood is surrounded by countryside near the nearby village of Woodford, its location doesn’t match Gloucester’s serene retreat. Visitors can find quiet walks and fresh eggs for sale nearby, but the experience feels less curated and more functional.

Despite giving Michaelwood a fair chance, it ranks low in customer satisfaction—28th in the Which.co.uk survey with 48%. For motorists prioritizing convenience, Michaelwood delivers, but those seeking a memorable and restful stop may prefer to continue to Gloucester Services or other higher-rated options on the M5.
