Common Habit That Ages Your Face More Than Smoking

Many everyday habits can speed up the ageing process, with smoking, alcohol, and sun exposure often blamed for skin damage and premature ageing. However, there’s another widespread habit—nail biting—that specialists warn is quietly adding years to your face, particularly by damaging your smile.

Although nail biting may not visibly harm your skin, it can seriously affect your mouth and teeth. Since your smile is one of the first features people notice, maintaining healthy teeth is crucial. Dr. Tony Taunk, a dentist at Implant Perfection, urges people to break this habit before permanent damage occurs.

“Many people bite their nails without realizing the long-term consequences,” Dr. Taunk explains. “The repeated pressure from biting can wear down tooth enamel, damage front teeth, and cause misalignment and gaps over time.”

Nail biting is also linked to teeth grinding, which often leads to headaches and jaw discomfort. Dr. Taunk adds: “As we age, enamel thins naturally, exposing the yellowish dentin underneath. Nail biting accelerates this enamel loss, making your smile appear older than it really is.”

Known medically as onychophagia, nail biting is often tied to stress and poor impulse control, with many individuals doing it unconsciously. Beyond cosmetic concerns, it poses health risks. Bacteria from your nails can transfer to your mouth, increasing the likelihood of infections like colds, stomach bugs, and salmonella.

“Our smile is a central aspect of our appearance,” says Dr. Taunk. “Nail biting speeds up enamel erosion, gum recession, and overall dental wear, all of which contribute to a prematurely aged look.”

Breaking the nail-biting habit not only protects your dental health but also helps preserve a youthful, confident smile.
