Commemorating 80 Years Since VE Day in Gloucester

Gloucester is set to host a series of events next week to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE). This significant day celebrates the formal acceptance by the Allies of Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on May 8, 1945, which marked the official end of hostilities in World War Two.

The commemoration starts with an official proclamation by town crier Alan Myatt at the Cross at 9 am. Following this, a history huddle at Llanthony Secunda Priory will provide a space for people to share stories, memories, and photographs of Gloucester and Llanthony during WW2. The evening will feature a celebration at the priory and Sula Lightship, encouraging participants to dress in 1940s attire, bringing picnics, and enjoying vintage vibes.

The day culminates with a ceremony on the summit of Robinswood Hill, where the Mayor, Sheriff, their consorts, and the Town Crier will join others across the UK in lighting a Beacon of Hope to commemorate Victory in Europe in World War Two.
